Effects of anorexia nervosa on bone density.

چکیده
Sir, As arrhythmias occur when thrombolytics are administered, it is advised by Rawles (editorial, April Journal, p.l71) and by Hannaford and colleagues (April Journal, p.175) and elsewhere' that every doctor carrying thrombolytics outside hospital should also carry a defibrillator. I was not aware of this in 1992 when I considered participating in Hannaford and colleagues' study and it is not yet made clear in published drug advice.2 I would ask Hannaford and colleagues how many doctors in their study relied on the ambulance defibrillator rather than their own machine, and if any doctors administered thrombolytics in the absence of a defibrillator. If reperfusion can precipitate arrhythmias then other drugs that relieve ischaemia might produce arrhythmias during myocardial infarction. I would value further information on this, because drug administration can often be delayed until defibrillation facilities have arrived.

Androgens in women with anorexia nervosa and normal-weight women with hypothalamic amenorrhea.
CONTEXT Anorexia nervosa and normal-weight hypothalamic amenorrhea are characterized by hypogonadism and hypercortisolemia. However, it is not known whether these endocrine abnormalities result in reductions in adrenal and/ or ovarian androgens or androgen precursors in such women, nor is it known whether relative androgen deficiency contributes to abnormalities in bone density and body composi...
متن کاملThe neuroendocrine basis of anorexia nervosa and its impact on bone metabolism.
Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a condition of profound undernutrition associated with alterations in various neuroendocrine axes, many of which contribute to a marked impairment in bone accrual and low bone mineral density. This review focuses on changes in the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis, the growth hormone insulin-like growth factor-1 axis, and the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis in AN, a...
متن کاملSelective Determinants of Low Bone Mineral Mass in Adult Women with Anorexia Nervosa
We investigated the relative effect of amenorrhea and insulin-like growth factor-I (sIGF-I) levels on cancellous and cortical bone density and size. We investigated 66 adult women with anorexia nervosa. Lumbar spine and proximal femur bone mineral density was measured by DXA. We calculated bone mineral apparent density. Structural geometry of the spine and the hip was determined from DXA images...
متن کاملMedical Findings in Women with Anorexia Nervosa in a Korean Population
OBJECTIVE Eating disorders are a common clinical problem among young women in Asian countries. The aim of this study is to determine the medical effects of anorexia nervosa (AN) in the Korean population. METHODS We comprehensively investigated medical complications including haemodynamic, haematologic, endocrine, and bone density abnormalities in 67 Korean women with AN, together with 194 hea...
متن کاملBone disease in anorexia nervosa.
Anorexia nervosa is a serious psychiatric disorder accompanied by high morbidity and mortality. It is characterized by emaciation due to self-starvation and displays a unique hormonal profile. Alterations in gonadal axis, growth hormone resistance with low insulin-like growth factor I levels, hypercortisolemia and low triiodothyronine levels are almost universally present and constitute an adap...
متن کاملImpact of anorexia, bulimia and obesity on the gynecologic health of adolescents.
Dieting behaviors and nutrition can have an enormous impact on the gynecologic health of adolescents. Teenaged patients with anorexia nervosa can have hypothalamic suppression and amenorrhea. In addition, these adolescents are at high risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Unfortunately, data suggest that estrogen replacement, even in combination with nutritional supplementation, does not appear t...
